Rectors reflection: Saints and Souls

The great Swiss theologian Karl Barth (1886-1968) observed that honouring Saints and souls ‘falls under the Fifth Commandment: Honour thy father and mother!’ Elsewhere Barth cautioned modern Christians against having a childish ‘we know better now’ attitude toward our spiritual parents. For like parents, they initiate and nourish our spiritual life. On the one hand, a faith that acknowledges those who have exemplified and passed it on is more aware of its nature as gift and is more able to resist the modern individualistic delusion of life as a personal invention or exclusive, private possession. On the other hand, if we believe that God is present to us in and through our fellow humans, Jesus Christ being the principal instance, then we can only find God in and through the faith of the historic Church. Honouring the Saints and faithful Souls is one of the ways we keep in mind that our faith is given to us and is not ours to do with as we please.
