A very warm welcome to all
Psalm 90: “O Lord my God, in you I take refuge.”
Remembrance Sunday
Readings: Job 19: 21-27; 1 Corinthians 15: 51-57
Gospel: John 6: 37-40
In our Gospel today
On this day each year we remember those who have died in time of war. We often rightly focus on those who died during military service. What a tragedy it is when we read the names and see the ages of those who didn’t come home. What a sacrifice they made – those who gave their lives that we might have a better tomorrow.
We are encouraged too to remember innocent civilians whose lives have been cut short. Some will have been ‘white helmets’ but many taken in the indiscriminate violence that war and terrorism unleash.
We do well today to remember those who have served us. We do even better today to also reflect on the frailty of our own lives and the call upon each of us to live in the service of others. This is the call that comes to us from those we remember today.
Remembrance Sunday
In order to allow us to join in the national two minutes silence our Remembrance Sunday service will begin at 10:50am on Sunday 10th November. There will be a brief introduction and laying of wreaths before the silence. Please note this will be a Service of the Word service.
Christmas Selection Box Collection
Just to let everyone know that we’ll be collecting Christmas Selection Boxes again this year to donate to local charities. Apologies – this notice should have been included in last week’s newsletter. Thank you in advance for your donations!
Curry Night Friday 29th November
A note for your diary, we’ll be hosting a Curry Night on Friday 29th November at 7:30pm. Our last such event was a big success with delicious curries provided by congregation members of St Mary’s. Look out for the sign-up sheet at the back of church to help us gauge numbers attending and how many curry providers we can expect! Thank you!
East Garden Project
Good news! Recently, our architect, Dave Chouman, applied for planning permission to Aberdeen City Council for the creation of a new East End Garden at St Mary’s. The project includes new landscaping to replace the path between Albert Terrace and Carden Place and a new labyrinth with bench seating. The plans also include resetting the steps at both sides and inclusion of new hand railings. The project also includes repairs to our drainage system in the east end grounds area. A new border garden is also proposed. Please see our noticeboards for more details and copies of the plans at the back of church.
