A very warm welcome to all
Psalm 139: “Search me out, O God, and know my heart.”
The Second Sunday After the Epiphany
Readings: 1 Samuel 3: 1-10 (11-20); 1 Corinthians 6: 12-20
Gospel: John 1: 43-51
In our Gospel today
Last week, on the first Sunday of the New Year, Jenny encouraged us to think of our purposes for this year. This week all our readings talk of God’s purpose for us, and how we might come to recognise it – and avoid the other things we might do that are not what God wants from us. Our first reading is the familiar call to Samuel, the boy who keeps thinking his human master Eli is calling him, while in our Gospel reading Jesus recognises Nathaniel – and that recognition means that he knows Nathaniel’s purpose. The Psalm and the Epistle show us how we are made for God’s purpose – fearfully and wonderfully.
Air Commodore Reg Whittaker MBE
Air Commodore Reg Whittaker MBE passed away this week after a long life of church involvement and public service. Although only a member at St Mary’s for a short while he will be remembered fondly for his warmth, modesty and gracious character. We pray for his wife Moy and their close family at this time of loss. Service to be held at Gilcomston South Church on 22nd January at 11am
Annual General Meeting
St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Annual General Meeting will take place after the 10am Service on Sunday 4th February. Bishop Dorsey McConnell will be with us for the service and the AGM. Reports for the AGM should be available to send to the Diocesan Office about one week before the AGM.
New Vestry Members Required
The Vestry need a few new Ordinary Members as some existing members complete their period of service and also because we’ve been running a little low on members for some time now. If you would like to know what’s involved or are keen to be nominated, please speak to one of our wardens. Nomination forms for Vestry membership and other Vestry offices are available at the back of church. Please note that forms must be submitted to the Vestry Secretary by 28th January latest.
Vestry Meeting
The Vestry will be meeting on Tuesday 16th January at 7:30pm.
