A very warm welcome to all
Third Sunday of Easter
Readings: Acts 2: 14a, 36-41; 1 Peter 1: 17-23
Gospel: Luke 24: 13-35
In our Gospel
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! He is risen – He is risen indeed !! Rarely does the Gospel tell us what to do or believe. Rarely does it give us a straight answer. And today’s Gospel, the Road to Emmaus story, is no different. It doesn’t give us answers. It raises questions and invites reflection. It’s a map by which we orient and find ourselves. It reveals intersections of Jesus’ life and our lives. It begs to be recognised as a story about our lives and a story with which we are familiar. It is a story of shattering and restoration.
Thank You
I am deeply grateful to Dr Nicola Mills for officiating at our Service of the Word today (Sunday). As the previous newsletter mentioned, there will be no midweek services this coming week. I am taking a few days off with Sam, which may or may not mean, remaining in Aberdeen. I will be back for all of next Sunday’s services.
Vestry Meeting
The planned Vestry meeting for the 25th of April is now cancelled. I will rearrange another meeting as soon as I finish my short break.
West End Garden
If my diary is correct, then work on the West End Garden project will commence on Monday the 1st or Tuesday the 2nd of May. This will mean that there will be some disruption for parking which will be quite limited, during the duration of the work.
Choir Vestry
Work will also begin very soon to replace the carpet in the Choir Vestry with engineered wood and the kitchen area with new linoleum. This will be a weekday commitment and will hopefully not affect our Sunday Fellowship.
Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief
The Rev’d Dr Ruth Green has asked me to advertise the following event which will take place at St James’, Holborn Junction at 2 pm on Thursday the 4th of May. ‘Good Life, Good Death. Good Grief – demystifying Death – Grave-talk, A Cafe Space to talk about death, dying and Funerals’. Dr Ruth’s Doctorate concentrated on the practicalities and preparation for death for all involved, and everything that it brings. I highly commend this talk if you are free.
2023 Photograph Competition
Our 2023 Photograph Competition will be launched later this week and the full details will appear on our Website soon.
War in Ukraine
Please continue to offer prayers for our brothers and sisters caught up in Ukraine’s mayhem. Please think about what you can do to help in any way for those who continue to reach out to the rest of Europe and beyond for our assistance. Whatever method or organisation you use to make donations, please do it rather than think about it.
Bottle Appeal
We continue to ask everyone to consider donating any unusual bottles for our ‘Bottle Appeal’. This is an ongoing fundraising initiative and I ask you to keep your eyes open.
Poem Competition 2023
Just to remind everyone that our Short Poetry Competition was launched on the 4th of December. If you recall how successful our previous competition was it was a ‘no-brainer’ that we should do it again. So, get your artistic thinking caps on once more and let’s see if we can have some wonderful poems as we did last time. I have decided to extend the cut-off date of the competition, so you now have until the end of June 2023 to submit your entries via email to stmaryscardenplace@gmail.com or if you do not have a computer, on a hard copy to either myself or Mr David Rose our webmaster. The rules can be found via the website on the following link to this year’s competition at https://stmaryscardenplace.org.uk/uncategorized/poem-competition-2023/ Further information will be updated and will soon be made available.
