‘Send forth your Spirit O Lord, and renew the face of the earth’
A very warm welcome to all
The Day of Pentecost
Readings: Genesis 11: 1-9; Acts 2: 1-21
Gospel: John 14: 8-17 (25-27)
In today’s Gospel
In this morning’s Gospel, we hear Philip ask Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” How could Philip ask to see God the Father? what was he thinking. And more than that, Jesus shows how discouraged He was with Philip, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’” Jesus told Philip that he didn’t need to ask to see the Father because Jesus and the Father are the same One God. To know Jesus is to know God. To see the Son is to see the Divine Father.
War in Ukraine
Please continue to offer prayers for our brothers and sisters caught up in the mayhem that is Ukraine. Please think about what you can do to help in any way for those who continue to reach out to the rest of Europe and beyond for our assistance. Whatever method or organisation you use to make donations, please do it rather than thinking about it.
Bake Off – Sunday 19th June
This gives everyone notice of some fundraisers we have coming up. The first one is a ‘Bake Off’. Basically, what is proposed is that everyone who is able to, bake something off and bring it into Church on Sunday the 19th of June (two weeks time). We will then have an auction to sell off all of the cakes/bread etc and we will have someone judge what is considered the best three entries. There is scope for as many whacky ideas as you wish and I encourage as many of you as possible to join in. I also encourage entries from our younger members. Fr Roger will oversee this event as I will be abroad on holiday.
Hymns 4 U – Saturday 9th July
On Saturday the 9th of July at 1pm, there will be a service of hymns held at St Mary’s. It is a fundraiser, and the name we have come up with for it is ‘Hymns 4 U’. Essentially what we (the fundraising committee) are asking is that each of us pay a pound per hymn, for our three favourite hymns. The top ten hymns with the most votes we will sing, and have a little talk on each of them. You can either pay via our donation button on the home page of the website https://stmaryscardenplace.org.uk (making sure to mention what the money relates to) or to myself or our Treasurer, Mrs Lydia Ross. You can notify us of your three hymns via our church email address at stmaryscardenplace@gmail.com or in an envelope addressed to me.
No Compline Service – Friday 10th June
There will be no Compline Service on Friday the 10th of June due to my attendance (online) at General Synod.
Jewellery
As mentioned in previous weeks, I am asking you to look through your jewellery boxes to see if you are prepared to part with something that you really haven’t used for years or maybe you just feel like donating something you have no further use of. Of course, it doesn’t have to be gold, it could be any type of jewellery that we might be able to sell on to a jewellers. In any case, I am now appealing to you to consider this and I intend to keep this running for the next 3 months, at which point we can assess where we are.
Coffee/Tea helpers
I continue to look for someone to take responsibility for producing a rota to look after the provision of teas and coffees at our after-service fellowship. Please come and speak with me if you are willing to help. Mrs Gillian Rose has offered to resume control of the purse for donations made during fellowship.
Vestry Vacancies
We have two vacancies on St Mary’s Vestry for Ordinary Members, and I would strongly urge those who feel that they could offer something to assist in the management of our Church to speak to me. Vestry membership is a rewarding role and provides an insight in to how we reach the decisions we do in our work here at Carden Place.
Reading Scripture
Our Peoples Warden Mr Iain Stewart has asked me to put out a call for more people to consider volunteering to read scripture and intercede at our worship. Should you feel so inclined, I encourage anyone who is considering this valuable ministry to approach Ian in the first instance.
