‘You have made me, Lord, as strong as the mountains’
A very warm welcome to all
3rd Sunday of Easter
Readings: Acts 9: 1-6 (7-20); Revelation 5: 11-14
Gospel: John 21: 1-19
In today’s Gospel
Alleluia, Christ is risen !! He is risen indeed, Alleluia, Alleluia! Whatever you eat first thing in the morning, is meant to set us up for the day ahead. A good breakfast should ‘fuel us up’ and ‘get us going’ for our day’s work. But Peter’s breakfast in our passage today, sets him up for a lifetime’s work, not just a day’s. Because Peter’s encounter with Christ on the beach that morning included a re-commission to service as well as a restoration of their relationship. Verse 15 today tells us that “after they had finished eating” Jesus spoke directly to Peter. In this conversation, Christ reinstated Peter to his role as the chief apostle. Jesus entrusted Peter with responsibility for leading the early Church.
War in Ukraine
Please continue to offer prayers for our brothers and sisters caught up in the mayhem that is Ukraine. Please think about what you can do to help in any way for those who continue to reach out to the rest of Europe and beyond for our assistance. Whatever method or organisation you use to make donations, please do it rather than thinking about it.
Please remember in your prayers
Please remember in your prayers, The Rev’d Jean Souter and Mrs Florence B. Cal-Anglia, both of whom have died in the past several days. They were both committed Christians and were inspirational to all who came into contact with them. We hold them, their families and friends in our prayers today and we ask that light perpetual shines upon them.
Monday Service
There will be a Holy Communion service at 10am on Monday to celebrate the feast day of Philip and James the Apostles. I will therefore move my rest day to Thursday in order to provide this service.
Gold
As mentioned in previous weeks, I am asking you to look through your jewellery boxes to see if you are prepared to part with something that you really haven’t used for years or maybe you just feel like donating something you have no further use of. Of course, it doesn’t have to be gold, it could be any type of jewellery that we might be able to sell on to a jewellers. In any case, I am now appealing to you to consider this and I intend to keep this running for the next 3 months, at which point we can assess where we are.
Cheese and Wine
There will be a Cheese and Wine fundraising event at St Mary’s on the evening of Friday the 13th of May. Previous similar gatherings have been very popular so please don’t leave it until the last minute. There will be a charge of £15 per person, which if possible, should be paid before the 13th of May. However, if this is not possible, payment can be made on the evening. I would be extremely grateful if the details of this event are circulated as widely as possible amongst friends and associates. There will be a sheet at the rear of the church for names of anyone intending to come, in order to get a good idea of numbers. Please feel free to invite friends and family.
War and Christianity
On Monday the 16th of May at 7pm, there will be a discussion evening at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Choir Vestry titled: Is this a ‘time for war’? ‘Thinking together as Christians about war in the context of armed conflict in Ukraine’. The guest speaker will be Dr Brian Brock, Professor of Moral and Practical Theology at Aberdeen University. This will be a very interesting talk and we are deeply grateful that Dr Brock has found time to share his thoughts with us. This event is open to any who wish to attend, and if the numbers dictate, we will consider moving it into the main body of the Church. We hope to provide tea and coffee on the night. Please put this date in your diaries and invite anyone whom you think would enjoy such a discussion.
Coffee/Tea helpers
I am looking for someone to take responsibility for producing a rota to look after the provision I am looking for someone to take responsibility for producing a rota to look after the provision of teas and coffees at our after-service fellowship. Please come and speak with me if you are willing to help. Mrs Gillian Rose has offered to resume control of the purse for donations made during fellowship.
Fundraising Events
The following is a direct link to our fundraising events calendar should you be interested in what is happening in the coming months. https://stmaryscardenplace.org.uk/social-fundraising-calendar/
Vestry Vacancies
We have two vacancies on St Mary’s Vestry for Ordinary Members, and I would strongly urge those who feel that they could offer something to assist in the management of our Church to speak to me. Vestry membership is a rewarding role and provides an insight in to how we reach the decisions we do in our work here at Carden Place.
Reading Scripture
Our Peoples Warden Mr Iain Stewart has asked me to put out a call for more people to consider volunteering to read scripture and intercede at our worship. Should you feel so inclined, I encourage anyone who is considering this valuable ministry to approach Ian in the first instance.
Scaffolding
I was recently informed that the scaffolding alongside the side entry will soon be removed as work there is drawing to a completion. However, as the work continues, I ask each and every one of you to take extra care when entering and exiting the building. Parking space is now severely limited but will still be available to those who require it on a Sunday due to mobility issues. Parking is also available during our weekday services. The scaffolding inside the Church to enable the removal and repair of the damaged rose window will remain until completion. I have no idea how long this process will take and I ask for your continued patience.
Thanksgiving at St James
The Rev’d Dr Ruth Green, has asked me to let you know of a Thanksgiving and Celebration service being held at St James at Holburn Junction, to mark the significant refurbishment that has taken place within. The service will take place on Saturday the 14th of May at 11am with some light refreshment afterwards.
