Newsletter – Sunday 20th June 2021

19/06/2021 by David Rose

Third Sunday after Trinity

St Mary’s and St Andrew’s Worshipping Together

A very warm welcome to all

Readings: Ezekiel 17: 22-24; Psalm 92: 1-4, 11-14; 2 Corinthians 5: 6-17

Gospel: Mark 4: 35-41

In today’s Gospel

When we hear in today’s Gospel from Mark “Let us go across to the other side”, in some ways that short phrase describes the spiritual life. Jesus is always taking us across to the other side – to new ways of believing, seeing, thinking, acting, new ways of being and relating to others, new ways of living, loving, and trusting. These new ways are God’s ways. To go across to the other side is, at some level, to enter into new territory, a foreign land waiting to be explored or more deeply experienced.

Remembering Canon Jim Alexander

The family of the late Canon Jim Alexander, have asked me to pass on their thanks to those who attended the funeral on Monday. They were lifted by the many kind words and memories that were brought flooding back. I am grateful to those who assisted on the day to make Canon Jim’s farewell a memorable occasion.

Today we shall sing!

Today we shall sing! We have five hymns, and I would suggest that if you wish to remain seated during the singing then you should do so. If singing makes you feel uncomfortable at any point then you should refrain. Whatever the case may be, I would value your feedback as we return to singing together once more as a congregation. Unfortunately we still need to wear facemasks so please do not participate if it doesn’t feel right for you.

Provincial Service

There will be no Pre-Recorded service from St Mary’s this Sunday. The Provincial service, Presided by Bishop Anne, is being broadcast from this Diocese at 11 am on Sunday and would therefore draw your attention to that event. You can download the order of service here: http://bit.ly/SECPentecost4 You can join the service at: Facebook or You tube link available Sunday morning.  Bishop Anne is assisted by the Very Rev Dr Dennis Berk, Rector, and Dean of the Diocese. John Palmer, Mandy Davis and Kim Leonard are the readers and intercessor.

Quartet for Service of 27th June

There will be a ‘Quartet’ singing for us at our 10 am service next Sunday. This has been organised by Matthew our Organist.

The Blessed Virgin Mary’s Day – 15th August

Sunday the 15th of August is The Blessed Virgin Mary’s Day; and therefore our Patronal Festival. In our continuing stewardship campaign, we propose to hold a ‘Gift Day’. Some of you may recall that this was initially introduced as a method to assist in our fundraising campaigns. Recently, we have asked our congregation to review their weekly/monthly/annual giving and to consider whether it could be increased. I would still urge you to do this if you haven’t already done so, but only if you can afford it. To those who have recently increased their giving, I am deeply grateful for your continued support and generosity. However, the proposed ‘Gift Day’ on August the 15th is another opportunity to make a gift donation to St Mary’s, which will be put towards our continuing Repair and Refurbishment programme. There will be more information forthcoming via newsletters and other material which I will soon distribute. The St Mary’s website will also provide some information soon.
